Strange worms found in London Tube Station Platform

(click on the photo to see a full resolution photograph)

This was in Farringdon Tube Station while I was haring off for a meeting at the Guardian. I was already late, it was chucking it down and I had never been to that building. But still, I saw this and had to stop to take a photograph (got plenty of dirty looks as I was interrupting the flow).

The roof of the station had obviously leaked, quite badly. And there was a big pool of water. So they had put up that yellow sign, cleaning in progress. But to soak up the water, they put these weird long white absorbent material worm like things. They really looked creepy and repulsive. Almost like they are drinking water and will soon wriggle off. Gaks.
