#photography Piccadilly Circus and Eros (mistaken identity – Anteros). #history

Had to go listen to a lecture so i nipped out a few minutes early so that I can catch some good light and some good pics. Piccadilly is one of the most famous and recognisable places in the city (see that in countless postcards) and the Eros statue is one of the big landmarks.

Here’s the statue. Its actually supposed to be Anteros. I did not know this, I always thought it was Eros. Seems like everybody confuses this with Eros because of the wings and bow and nudity. Well, I life and learn. Also note the pigeon on top, lol. Nice one. Reading the history of this God, I wont be surprised if this God would become the Patron God for gay and lesbian folks :), nice legend behind this. I quote from the wiki site:

An altar to this god was put up by the metics in Athens in commemoration of the spurned love of the metic Timagoras who was rejected by the Athenian Meles. Upon hearing Timagoras' declaration of love for him, the young man mockingly ordered him to throw himself down from the top of a tall rock. Seeing Timagoras dead, Meles repented and threw himself down from the same rock

Some more photographs of Anteros from different angles.

Then off to the right, I saw this set of sculptures on top of a building. Look beautiful, eh? in both colour and black and white.
